Repeat Customers and Referrals: The Cheapest Work You'll Ever Get

Chasing new customers costs time and money. Repeat jobs and word-of-mouth are far cheaper and far easier. Here's how to get more of them.

Ask any established tradesperson where their best jobs come from and they'll almost always say the same thing: repeat customers and people they were recommended to. No adverts, no bidding against five other quotes, no leads to buy — just someone who already trusts you or was told to trust you. It's the cheapest, easiest work there is, and most trades could get a lot more of it.

Why repeat work is the best work

A customer you've worked for before is worth far more than a cold enquiry:

  • They already trust you, so there's no convincing to do.
  • They rarely haggle on price the way a stranger might.
  • They cost you nothing to reach — no ads, no lead fees.
  • One happy customer often tells several others.

Win the job well once and it can pay you back for years.

Stay in touch after the job

The mistake most trades make is disappearing the moment the job's done. Then a year later the customer needs you again, can't find your number, and rings someone else. Make sure they can always reach you — save your number for them, leave a card, drop a quick "any problems just shout" text a week after. Little touches keep you in mind.

Just ask — nicely

Most happy customers are glad to recommend you; they just don't think to unless you nudge them. A simple "if you know anyone else who needs a hand, I'd really appreciate you passing my number on" works wonders. The same goes for reviews — and we've covered how to get more 5-star reviews as a tradesperson, which do a lot of your recommending for you.

Make it easy to pass you on

The easier you make it, the more it happens. Give people something to hand over — a card, a saved contact, a business number that's easy to remember. When a mate asks "who did your bathroom?", you want your customer to fire off your details in seconds.

Look after them from the first call

All of this rests on one thing: being reliable from the very first contact. A customer who couldn't even get hold of you won't be recommending you to anyone. That's why it pays to make sure no customer call ever goes unanswered — every good first impression is a future referral.
