You're Missing More Calls Than You Think — Here's How to Find Out

Most tradespeople have no idea how many calls they actually miss in a week. Once you see the real number, it's hard to ignore. Here's how to check.

Ask most tradespeople how many calls they miss and they'll say "not many." Then they actually look at their phone log and get a shock. Missed calls are easy to underestimate because a lot of them you never even notice — and every one could have been a job.

The calls you never even see

You'd remember missing a call if you watched it ring out. But most missed calls happen when you're not looking:

  • You're on a job with your phone in the van.
  • You're driving and can't safely answer.
  • Your phone's on silent from the last customer meeting.
  • A second person rings while you're already on a call.
  • You're somewhere with no signal and it goes straight to voicemail.

None of those feel like "missing a call" in the moment — but to the customer on the other end, that's exactly what it is.

Why it adds up fast

Miss two or three calls a day and that's fifteen a week. Even if only some of them were real jobs, the numbers get scary quickly. We put actual figures on it in how much a missed call is really costing your trade business — for most trades it's thousands a year walking out the door.

How to find your real number

Don't guess — count. It takes five minutes:

  • Open your phone and go to your recent calls.
  • Look for the red "missed" entries over the last week.
  • Add up how many you never rang back.
  • Be honest about how many of those were probably new customers.

Whatever number you land on, it's almost certainly higher than you'd have guessed.

What to do about it

You can't answer every call — nobody can. But you can make sure no missed call goes completely unanswered. That's the whole idea behind a missed-call text-back: the second you don't pick up, the caller gets a text so they know you'll be in touch, instead of ringing the next name on their list.

ReplyBack does exactly that, automatically, so those calls you never even see don't turn into lost work. Try it free for 14 days.
